Barnyard Barter & Vending exists so that nothing good from a garden goes to waste.
Barnyard Barter & Vending exists so that nothing good from a garden goes to waste.
It started with too many tomatoes.
In the spring of 2026, I started a small home garden using a Gardyn indoor growing system. It worked better than I ever expected. Week after week, I was harvesting more lettuce, herbs and greens than my household could possibly eat.
I didn't want any of it to go to waste. I also knew there had to be neighbors with their own extras: backyard lemons, fresh eggs, honey, seedlings. Some of them probably wanted exactly what I had too much of. What was missing was an easy, trusted way to find each other and make a trade.
So I set out to build one.
What began as a simple idea, *"I have this, and I'd love to trade it for that,"* quickly grew. Neighbors needed a safe way to message and meet up, and local farm stands needed a way to be found. Indoor growers like me wanted to compare notes with others using the same system. And everyone needed planting advice that fit their own zip code.
From there, it just blossomed into **Barnyard Barter & Vending**: a place where home gardeners, backyard flocks and small local growers can swap, share and sell, so that nothing good from a garden goes to waste.

Every growing season, backyard gardeners end up with more zucchini, lemons or eggs than they can use, while a neighbor a few streets away is buying the same thing at the store. Small farm stands and market growers grow great food but struggle to be found. We built Barnyard Barter to connect these people: a trusted, local place to swap with neighbors, share for free, and buy directly from the growers down the road.
We believe in neighbor-to-neighbor trade, fresh food grown close to home, and small growers being able to make a living. The app is built around local seasons, local people and local trust, and it works in every US zip code.
🔄 Barter-first, not just buy-and-sell
Most marketplace apps are built around selling. Barnyard Barter puts trading first. Members list what they Have and what they Want, the app suggests matches automatically, and neighbors can make, counter, accept or decline trade offers like a real conversation.
🧺 Swapping and selling in one place
Neighbors trading backyard extras and local Vendors selling their harvest share one app and one map. A simple toggle switches between Barter and Vendors, so shoppers can trade, find a free item or buy, all in the same place.
🏪 Real storefronts for small growers
Every Vendor gets a shareable storefront with photo galleries, prices, pickup hours, payment options and followers. Links show a proper preview when shared by text or Facebook, and anyone can view the storefront without installing the app.
🪧 Printable QR signs that connect a roadside stand to the app
Vendors can print a QR sign as a letter sign, a fold-up table tent or an 11×17 poster with their stand photo. Shoppers scan it with their phone camera, and Vendors see which sign location brings in the most visitors.
📈 Insights that help small growers sell more
Vendors see what neighbors are searching for nearby, get alerts when a crop they grow is in demand, and follow an 8-week visitor trend chart. A Monday email recaps how many people visited their storefront.
🌱 Free Plant Stands on the map
Members can pin and find free plant and produce stands, the "take what you need" spots in a neighborhood, so sharing is as easy as trading.
🗓️ Tools that make pickups actually happen
"Hold For Me" requests, swap confirmations, pickup reminders and a Swap Calendar keep trades from falling through, and written reviews build trust over time.
🌎 Built around your local season
The app shows a Seasonal Harvest Guide, frost dates and your local time zone based on your zip code, and the artwork changes with the seasons. Planting advice is meant for your area, not a generic national calendar.
🪴 Communities for indoor and hydroponic growers
"How I Grow" profiles bring together growers who use the same system, such as Gardyn or AeroGarden. Each system has local group chats, photo sharing and "Top Harvest" photo contests.
🛡️ Safety and privacy built in from day one
- Every member verifies a phone number and agrees to clear Community Guidelines.
- Members can report or block anyone.
- Only your neighborhood is shown, never your address.
- Location data is removed from every photo automatically.
- Members can download or delete their data at any time.
🤝 A community that grows itself
Members earn Recruiter badges and free months for inviting growers and Vendors. Monthly Vendor recruiter leaderboards and shareable milestone cards celebrate the people helping the community grow.
⭐ Founding Members, honored
Early beta testers were named Founding Members. They keep special locked-in pricing for their first year and received a personal thank-you when the app launched.
Our hope is to go from one overflowing garden to a community of growers across the country, and we're just getting started.
